FAQs About HPHS
Find answers to commonly asked questions about High Plains Humane Society and the animals in your car.
How can I adopt an animal? (Cost, availability, etc.)
HPHS doesn’t house any animals at our facility. In order to adopt an animal, we recommend you contacting Clovis Animal Shelter or one of the rescues in town. We have information regarding each of these options on our Adopt page.
How can I get help with my animals?
The High Plains Humane Society offers a pet food pantry for emergency situations. If you are in crisis and unable to feed your animals, please contact us by calling 575-791-2572.
We offer low-cost spay/neuter clinics and vaccination events throughout the year. Check our Facebook page for up-to-date information regarding the dates of these events.
Do you take stray animals in?
HPHS is a non-profit advocacy organization. We do not accept stray animals. If you find an animal in need of care, please contact the Clovis Animal Shelter for further assistance.
Who do I contact for animal cruelty cases?
For animal cruelty cases within the Clovis city limits, please contact the Clovis Police Department non-emergent line. Their phone number is 575-769-1921.
When can I vaccinate my puppy/kitten?
HPHS has no veterinary experience, however our vet contacts recommend the following:
Puppy – You should get your puppy’s first vaccines between 6 and 8 weeks of age. It is also recommended that you deworm them at that age as well. The American Kennel Club has a great resource page with information regarding new puppy vaccines. You can visit that by clicking here.
Kitten – You should get your kitten’s first vaccines between 6 and 8 weeks of age. It is also recommended that you deworm them at that age as well. PetMD has a great resource page with information regarding kitten vaccines. You can visit it by clicking here.
How old does my animal have to be to get spayed/neutered?
Many vets recommend spaying/neutering your animal at 6 months of age. Our spay/neuter clinics will spay/neuter animals as early as 4 months, though. It is mostly a vet preference. Contact yours if you have questions.
Where can I take my animal for emergency vet care after hours?
Unfortunately, there are no 24-hour emergency vet clinics in Clovis. The closest are in Lubbock and Amarillo.
Lubbock Small Animal Emergency Clinic is open only during after hours. You can visit their website here.
